Happy Birthday BGA !

As part of its second birthday celebrations, the British Grooms Association (BGA) is proud to announce its new Premier Membership option.

This new band of membership has been created to tackle the worrying amount of grooms who work without any insurance, hence putting their livelihoods at risk. This new membership includes a Personal Accident Insurance Cover from South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) and costs just £59.50 per annum.

Lucy Katan, BGA Executive Director explained, “Since our launch in 2007 we have become acutely aware of how many grooms work without any personal accident insurance. So many grooms appear to be unaware that if they get injured and are employed the standard rate for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is just £79.15 a week. If they are freelance and therefore self employed they will get nothing – insurance is imperative when working around horses.

With the support of SEIB we have managed to create a Premiership Membership which only takes a few minutes to sign up for and will hopefully tackle this issue and encourage more grooms to join their Association.“

The insurance is unique as it covers the groom for loss of earnings whilst they are off work through an accident. This can also be advantageous to the employer as it will help to ensure that their grooms are earning enough money to pay the bills whilst they are off work. Of course some employers are more generous and offer certain periods of sick pay within their contracts, but as a freelance groom you will not receive this benefit and it is, therefore, important to be insured.
