Good stuff for Euro grooms

The recent European Championships held at Windsor Great Park have attracted quite a bit of criticism from the media regarding the empty seats.

Reports also suggested that the grooms didn't have a good show; however this was not strictly true. Although there we some initial complaints surrounding the food situation, which was quickly resolved, BGA member and Team GBR Stable Manager, Jenny Ellis (pictured right) told the BGA what was simply great about the Championships. We all agreed that things have moved forward majestically over recent years, although there is still a little room for improvement. Jenny explained more-

"Arrival to the show ground was a smooth operation. The lorries were parked properly. Grooms were told where the electricity and showers were, and then told to take passport and horse to stable managers, checked by the vet, and shown to their stables. Tractors were then available to bring kit over, these often worked through the night.

Although the stables were in close proximity to everything, golf carts were on hand to ferry grooms throughout the show.

The stables were excellent and had covered central isles, fans and lights. Stallion boards were available, though the intricate stable plan avoided stallions being near mares.

There was ample room for hand walking and grazing and water was available by every stable block.

The wash boxes were brilliant. 6 covered stables, with a soak away floor. They were safe and fantastic for stallions.

Team GBR grooms had access to a port cabin, with hot and cold drinks, sweet and savoury snacks, and a place to sit.

£1,000 was put up for a night of free drink for the grooms and there was even a toastie van within the stable area. Any problems were quickly sorted by Sheila, the Stable Manager, and her team. "

The BGA will be working closely with LOCOG - the organising committee of London 2012 Olympic Games to keep you informed of all the plans for the grooms at the next prestigious event to be held on British soil.
