The British Grooms Association (BGA) has once again responded to industry demand and created a new Student Membership option.
The new brand of BGA membership includes SEIB Standard Personal Accident Insurance Cover which is specifically tailored towards students, and costs just £43.75 per annum.
BGA Executive Director, Lucy Katan, explained, “At the end of the last student year we received a high volume of new members who wanted insurance cover for their work placement. With support from South Essex Insurance Brokers we have created a membership option that fulfils the need of all students at an extremely affordable price.”
There is often confusion surrounding students and their insurance cover. Nicky Mckenzie from SEIB explained more, “Students sometimes make the mistake of thinking that if they are injured there will be automatic compensation as they are employed in a yard or are a student at a college. Often this is not the case. Employers are required to take out Employers Liability insurance by law under The Employers Liability Act 1969. The purpose of this is to provide security for employees if they meet with an accident or incur an illness in the course of their employment, where their employer is responsible.
A college should have public liability insurance to protect students but compensation for injury is not automatic. Once again, it will depend on the circumstances surrounding the incident as to who is liable and for what, if any compensation will be paid. Therefore once again an accident where no fault can be proved will not lead to a payment to the student.
Personal accident insurance protects students if they are not eligible for an insurance payment due to negligence. Even if there is no fault proved the student will still be entitled to payment under the BGA personal accident scheme and in addition any other personal accident insurance that they have in place. Even if the student is injured and liability from either an employer or the college can be proved this is likely to take time to settle and the personal accident payment would act as a much needed stop gap.”
The BGA recommends that all grooms and students who work hands on with horses have personal accident insurance cover and the BGA Student Membership is the perfect and affordable solution.
