The BGA was pleased to learn that the final hurdle to holding the equestrian competitions of the 2012 Olympic Games in London's Greenwich Park was removed last night (Tuesday 23 March).

During a marathon five-hour meeting of Greenwich Council's planning committee members voted 10 to two in favour of the application submitted by the London Organising Commitee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG).

Hundreds of local people for and against the application crowded into Woolwich Town Hall for the meeting. Pressure group NOGOE (No to Greenwich Olympic Equestrian Events) opposes the holding of the competitions in the Royal Park.

The BGA was proud to have its say in the matter, with an inclusion in the Planning Application:

"I write in support of the planning application. The park is an excellent venue for equestrian sport. The British Grooms Association, who through its members has participated in World Class events around the world, is utterly confident that the venue will be a success.

The arrangements for stabling and training areas are superb, with close proximity to the grooms accommodation being a crucial benefit. At the Hong Kong venue, the grooms were based at a hotel that was over 15 minutes away by bus; this was undesirable and caused many issues during the event. The grooms accommodation in Greenwich, which is just a 5 minute walk from the stables, will ensure the welfare of the horses is paramount at all times.

The fortunate members of the British Grooms Association, who will make it as part of Team GB in 2012, look forward to competing in Central London at Greenwich Park."
British Grooms Association (Lucy Katan Executive Director)

Those grooms who are part of 2012 will have the best facilities ever seen by an Olympic Groom. Staying just 5 mins walk from the stables, next to a great pub and in the stunning Devonport House hotel...tick, tick , tick !!

Even at this early stage, groooms are percieved as a key part of the event. The BGA is confident that the 2012 Olympic Grooms will receive the recognition that they deserve and have a simply great Games!
