The British Grooms Association (BGA) has taken the lead regarding the new Welfare of Animal (Transport) Order Legislation, via advice and guidance on its website and an offer of discounted training.
The new law covers all journeys over 65km that are ‘in connection with an economic activity’. There are several requirements under the new legislation, including the need to hold a certificate of competence for short journeys (over 65km and up to 8 hours) or for long journeys (over 8 hours). People will need to hold this from 5 January 2008.
Currently two awarding bodies can offer this service; the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust (BHEST) and NPTC.
The BGA has been quick to recognise that it is often the groom that will be driving the horses and so has negotiated with its Associate, Haddon Training, a special 10% discount for all BGA Members to take the qualifications through this UK based training provider, this will lead to a possible saving of up to £14.00.
Lucy Katan, Executive Director, says, “The awareness of the new Regulation appears to be very low and few grooms appear to know that it could affect them directly. Providing comprehensive guidance on issues such as this and negotiating discounted training is one of the core benefits of membership.”
